Annual Meetings of Professional Societies

Annual meetings of professional societies are important for sharing extension, research, and teaching information with colleagues. Proceedings from these meetings include abstracts of oral presentations and poster sessions, summary reports on research or experience-based findings. These reports are often the foundation of extension and teaching resources and programming.

We highlight the primary professional societies for plant scientists pursuing research in vegetable grafting below. (Note: this is not an exhaustive list of U.S. or globally-based professional societies for plant scientists in horticulture and agriculture.) Links to vegetable grafting related presentation abstracts from the most recent annual meetings and to prior year proceedings are included. Society websites can be accessed by clicking on logos.

The field of vegetable grafting literature is large and growing. Visit our REFERENCE DATABASE for a master list of citations from research-based, peer-reviewed vegetable grafting literature.

American Society for Horticultural Science

The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) promotes and encourages national and international interest in scientific research and education in all branches of horticulture.

August 2020’s ASHS Annual Conference included more than 20 presentations on grafted watermelon, tomato, cucumbers, and an exploratory study of a pac choi-daikon radish vegetable product. View and download a list of titles with links to their abstracts HERE. Past conference programs and abstracts can be found HERE and past presentation recordings HERE. Abstracts from ASHS Conference’s and Regional Meetings are published as supplements to ASHS’s HortScience journal.

American Phytopathological Society

The mission of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) is to discover and disseminate new knowledge of plant systems worldwide to meet humanity’s need for safe and nutritious food, affordable fiber, sustainable forests, and verdant landscapes; and promote the development and adoption of economically and environmentally sustainable practices to ensure plant health.

August 2020’s APS Annual Meeting included three presentations on grafted tomato. View and download a list of titles with links to their abstracts HERE. Past annual meeting archives can be found HERE. Abstracts from APS Annual and Division Meetings are published as supplements to APS’s Phytopathology journal.

Weed Science Society of America

The Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) promotes research, education, and extension outreach activities related to weeds; provides science-based information to the public and policy makers; and fosters awareness of weeds and their impacts on managed and natural ecosystems.

The WSSA hosts Annual Meetings and publishes the journal Weed Science. January 2018’s WSSA Annual Meeting included a presentation on the effects of Palmer amaranth density on grafted and nongrafted seedless watermelon yield. View or download the abstract HERE. No vegetable grafting related work was presented in 2019 or 2020. Past annual meeting programs and proceedings can be found HERE.
Below are two regional WSSA affiliates with a history of work in vegetable grafting.

Northeastern Weed Science Society

The Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS) serves the Northeastern United States by bringing together those who are concerned with the knowledge of weeds and their control; cooperates with other scientific societies to promote research, education, and outreach activities; and publishes scientific and practical information of value concerning weed science and related fields.

NEWSS hosts Annual Meetings and since 2016, a joint Northeastern Plant, Pest and Soils Annual Conference (NEPPSC) with the Northeastern Branches of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America and the Northern Region of the American Society of Horticultural Science. January 2018’s NEPPSC included a vegetable grafting a presentation on a seedless watermelon variety trial that included grafted treatments. View or download the abstract HERE. No vegetable grafting related work was presented in 2019 or 2020. View proceedings from recent NEWSS annual meetings HERE, archives of older proceedings HERE, and past NEPPSC conferences HERE.

Southern Weed Science Society

The Southern Weed Science Society (SWSS) was established to bring together those persons from any state, area, institution or agency, who are directly interested in weed control within the Society area (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico) through research, education, regulation, manufacturing or merchandising.

January 2018’s SWSS Annual Meeting included a presentation about the competitiveness of grafted and nongrafted seedless watermelon with Palmer amaranth. View or download the abstract HERE. No vegetable grafting related work was presented in 2019 or 2020. Past annual meeting proceedings can be found HERE.
