Worldwide, watermelon, melon and cucumber crops are grown in many types of systems (e.g., hydroponic greenhouse, semi-protected high tunnel, and open field). Millions of grafted watermelon, melon, and cucumber plants are used in hydroponic greenhouse and semi-protected soil-based systems annually in many regions of the world. Currently, however, grafted cucurbit crops are less common in high tunnel and open field systems in the U.S.
High tunnel- and field-based grafted watermelon, melon and cucumber fruit production systems are optimized through experience and research. Parameters including plant population and spacing and fertility, irrigation and pest and disease management are tailored to maximize system efficiency and productivity.
